A Better Measure of Academic Potential

Rethinking Admissions Criteria for Working Adult Learners

What would your reaction be if a job candidate, 10+ years into his career, described himself as a great leader because he was the captain of his high school soccer team? Or if she said she would thrive as the communications director because she got over 700 on the verbal section of the SAT? With years of work experience comes new learning and skills development that can qualify adults for a job - and for college admissions.

The rise in the number of working adult learners in need of upskilling and education marks an important opportunity for institutions of higher learning. But in order to support this changing demographic of learners, institutions will need to design their admissions experience to align with the reality of aspiring adult students and gauge their academic potential based on who they are today - not who they were in high school.

This report will provide valuable insight for higher education institutions looking to:

  • Help educate more of the 88M working adults in need of upskilling and reskilling.
  • Understand how other innovative institutions have rethought how we define and measure adult learners' potential to be successful.
  • Retool the admission process to be more inclusive for prospective working adult students.
